The umbraculum basilicale placed by the ciborium is a visible sign referring to the conferment of the dignity of Minor Basilica on St Mary’s Church. St Mary’s Church in Cracow became a basilica minor in 1962. This was done by a decision and bull of Pope John XXIII. At that time, the Bishop of Rome emphasised the spiritual and cultural significance of the Cracow Parish Church. This was at the special request of Karol Wojtyła, Archbishop of Krakow.
The papal umbrella was decorated by the Italian Serpone studio with the Marian monograms of Notre-Dame de Cracovie, the coats of arms of the city of Krakow, Bishop Iwo Odrowąż (founder of the parish 800 years ago), Pope John XXIII (author of the bull) and the coat of arms of Father Infulat Ferdinand Machay (archpriest of the church at the time).
Umbraculum basilicale stood next to the ciborium of Giovanni Maria Padovano (1551−1553), the candle of the Great Jubilee (2025 years since the birth of the Saviour in Bethlehem) with the inscription ‘Pilgrims of Hope — Jubilee 2025’), and next to the statues of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and the Infant Jesus (part of the installation of the crib). These statues were made a few years ago by the workshop of Ferdinand Stuflesser of Ortisei in South Tyrol.
